• "The reward center [of the brain] was discovered during the 1950s by researchers who attached electrical wires to this region in the brains of rats. The rats were able to move small currents of electricity into the wires by pushing a lever, and because doing so made the rats euphoric, they pushed the lever 2000 times an hour, until they fell down in exhaustion. Researchers conducted many similar experiments that delivered different kinds of drugs to rats when they pushed a lever. Rats showed the same lever-pushing behavior only for abusable drugs, such as cocaine and opioids, which suggests that these drugs function, at least in part, by stimulating the brain's reward center...Once in the bloodstream, cocaine produces a sense of euphoria and increased stamina. It is also powerful local anesthetic when applied topically. Within a few decades of its first isolation from plant material in 1860, cocaine was used as a local anesthetic for eye surgery and dentistry - a practice that stopped once safer local anesthetics were discovered in the early 1900s." 1
