• "It explodes when heated or when subjected to a sudden shock, as by a detonating cap...For convenience in use and to control its explosive power, nitroglycerine is mixed with various porous solids, wood pulp, for example. Such a mixture is called dynamite. Its composition varies with the purpose for which it is to be used. Sodium nitrate is sometimes added to furnish oxygen for the combustion of the wood pulp." 1
